Hear Our Expert's Take

The official guidelines for Americans recommend two servings of oily fish per week, equating to approximately 250mg per day of EPA and DHA, but higher doses have been found to improve benefits to brain and memory function, heart and eye health. According to the paper Predicting the effects of supplemental EPA and DHA on the omega-3 index, 2200mg per day would achieve an 8% increase in cellular EPA/DHA levels, which is double the benefit than that achieved by the recommended 250mg dose.

Based on scientific literature, the levels of EPA and DHA in Viva Naturals Triple-Strength Omega-3 fish oil, 1400mg and 480mg respectively, are at adequate levels to achieve optimum memory function, brain health, heart health and eye health. If the required results relate to neurological function and brain health, DHA is the most important element, and there are DHA dominant supplements available, which might be more suitable.

The chemical form of EPA and DHA affects its absorption. The triglyceride form, as used in the Viva Naturals Triple-Strength Omega-3 fish oil, greatly improves absorption (see this study) over the commonly used ethyl ester form. Viva Naturals’ fish oil has also been purified to remove heavy metals, PCBs and toxins. This product comes highly recommended.

The Final Word

The format in which you get your fish oil matters – some manufacturers use “ethyl esters” that your body needs to break down into digestible triglycerides. Viva Naturals makes their fish oil supplement directly in triglyceride form, which makes it easy for your body to digest and utilize.

We really appreciate that Viva Naturals’ fish oil is independently certified by the IFOS for purity and safety. They are one of the only manufacturers that focuses on sourcing small fish to even further eliminate the risk of mercury entering their supply chain.
