Hear Our Expert's Take

Nutrition Essentials Probiotic uses a Super Probiotic Blend of Lactase and Bacillus coagulans, indicating it only contains a single bacterial strain. In my opinion, probiotics containing multiple strains of bacteria are more beneficial. The diversity of bacterial strains in probiotics is important – higher variation in strains more closely represents the diversity in our gut.

It’s somewhat unclear to me as to exactly how many CFUs are guaranteed at manufacturing, which I find concerning. There is an indication of 15 billion CFUs on the label, one of their marketing images stated 30 million CFUs, and elsewhere they report 30 billion CFUs present. Thirty billion CFUs would be comparable to other brands, and higher CFU counts are generally better.

Nutrition Essentials’ probiotic is gluten-free and dairy-free. Unfortunately, it does contain filler ingredients including microcrystalline cellulose, dicalcium phosphate, stearate, and hydroxypropyl methylcellulose. In my opinion, these are unnecessary and diminish the quality of the product.

Overall, the Nutrition Essentials Probiotic wouldn’t be my top choice. It contains only one bacterial strain, less CFUs than competitors, and unnecessary fillers. As a Registered Dietitian, I would recommend another, higher quality product.

The Final Word

We were unable to determine exactly how many CFUs this probiotic contains. The label, marketing materials, and nutrition facts all seem to indicate different amounts.

While this is an extremely popular supplement in the probiotics category, we’d recommend checking with the brand as well as your health care professional to make sure it’s a good fit for your goals.
